Patrick Rizzotti is a scenic designer and Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Film at the University of British Columbia. His work explores how scenic design ideas become part of a shared creative process, from early visual proposals to decisions made in rehearsal and production.
His designs have been seen across Canada, the United States, and Europe in productions ranging from new plays and opera to large-scale musicals and devised performance. Recent and upcoming projects include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (upcoming, Citadel Theatre), Burning Mom (Arts Club Theatre Company/Citadel Theatre), Ring of Fire (Arts Club Theatre Company), The Mousetrap (Arts Club Theatre Company), and Behind the Moon (Touchstone Theatre). Several recent productions are continuing through remounts, touring productions, and venue transfers. Additional design credits include productions with Vancouver Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, and Off-Broadway companies in New York City.
His current research examines how scenographic ideas move through collaboration, representation, and iterative decision-making within professional production practice..
Patrick has presented and exhibited his work internationally, including projects and invited presentations in Canada, the United States, Europe, the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan, and China. His international leadership includes serving on the World Stage Design 2022 Organizing Committee as Co-Exhibition Designer and Multiple Realities Coordinator, and as Associate Artistic Director for the 2023 United States Prague Quadrennial Exhibitions. He currently serves as Chair of the USITT International Activities Committee and has also served on the Executive Committee of OISTAT.
His work has received recognition including the Jessie Award for Outstanding Scenic Design, the USITT Scenic Design Award, and the OPERA America Director-Designer Showcase. He is a Lincoln Center Directors Lab alumnus and a member of IATSE ADC659 and USA829. MFA, Carnegie Mellon University.
He lives in Vancouver with his partner and daughter.
